Mariners the world-over responded to the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 by making a list of safety standards all ships should follow. This included a list of safety gear. They wrote the “Safety of Life At Sea” (SOLAS) treaty. They then founded the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with support from the United Nations (UN) a few decades later. Many nations signed the treaty and joined the IMO. It held its first official meeting at UN headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland in 1959.
